Geocachers of Long Island’s Original Stash Birthday Bash & Community Celebration Event
To celebrate 20 years of geocaching, GoLI is throwing a birthday party and everyone is invited! This event is a Community Celebration Event to celebrate 20 YEARS OF GEOCACHING! That means everyone who attends will earn the new Community Celebration Event icon!
But wait, there’s more! Those attendees that bring a wrapped birthday present will leave with a wrapped birthday present! Value of the present should be approximately $10-$15. There is no cost to this event and you are not required to be involved in the gift exchange to attend.
Come celebrate geocaching's birthday! Prior to May 2, 2000, only the government had access to accurate GPS readings in the United States. On May 2, 2000, the Big Blue Switch was flipped dramatically improving the accuracy of tens of thousands of community owned GPS receivers.
The next day geocaching was born when Dave Ulmer hid a large bucket near Beavercreek, Oregon and posted the GPS coordinates on the internet calling it the “first stash hunt”. Mike Teague found Dave’s container three days later. Since then, over 3 million geocaches have been hidden worldwide!
Event Details: The event will be held at Eisenhower Park’s covered picnic tables near Field #1 from 3 PM to 5 PM on Saturday May 9th. And yes, there will be birthday cake!
GoLI also hosts events the last Wednesday of the month that are rotated to cover different areas of Long Island.
GoLI was created to: a) support, promote and enhance geocaching on Long Island by encouraging an active, helpful and fun geocaching community; b) create fun, educational and social geocaching events; and c) be an advocate for geocaching with property managers, government agencies and the general public. GoLI is a member-supported organization with membership options available at various levels, including free. GoLI membership not required to attend this event. Visit the GoLI website at Geocachersofli.org or our Geocachers of LI Facebook Group to learn more about GoLI, its objectives and membership levels.
